Out of curiosity and my desire to appear a cultured man of the world I decided to do a little research on wine, and wine trends for 2009.

I’m not one to drop several hundred dollars on a single bottle, not even if I was in a position to do so. I was interested in learning what good affordable bottles were available this year. This being my motive, I was delighted to immediately run across the advice of Belinda Chang wine director of The Modern in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. She tells us that “There is a wine for everyone, every place and every time…There is so much high quality wine being made in every corner of the world that it is not necessary to break out the Black Amex for a compelling bottle.”
Yes! My thinking exactly! Thank you Ms. Chang for your affirmations of what I was already thinking!

You see, these days the trends skew towards affordability and explorations of the left-of-center and local vintages. Ordering or serving super expensive wines – also known as second mortgage wines because of their lofty price – is a trend that is past its prime. Affordable wines can be just as impressive, if not more so, as pricey wines. Have the notion that locally produced wine isn’t going to be as exquisite as wines from Italy or France? Think again. More and more wineries from across the world are producing wines of note. This is true of Australia, Chile and right here in the United States. I’m sure many of us have been hearing for years how wines from California have truly come of age. Yes it appears the world has come down: if you want to impress, don’t go with the tried or true. Explore, be adventurous, try new things and hunt for a good bargain in the process…these are the wine trends of 2009.

In fact, I have what I believe to be a really good idea. Going with the spirit of exploration for affordable prices why not try a wine club or a mixed tasting package?
