Running and walking are two of the easiest and most natural ways to get exercise. Every month athletic shoe companies come out with new models that have all sorts of little innovations like Freon-filled midsoles and pump-it-up tongues. Choosing a suitable athletic shoe can be much more difficult than deciding how to exercise. Choose the wrong athletic shoes and you could end up lying on the couch nursing shin splints or aching heels instead of enjoying a brisk walk or run.
Here is some advice to heed before buying new footwear:
Don’t make shoes multitask. Walking shoes are stiffer; running shoes are more flexible, with extra cushioning to handle greater impact. If you do both activities, get a pair for each one. Know your foot. Sure, we’ve all got 10 toes and two heels, but beyond that, feet come in a variety of shapes — and knowing your foot’s particular quirks is key to selecting the right pair of shoes.
Most major brands now offer a model to suit every foot type. One way to determine your foot’s shape is to just look at where your last pair of shoes shows the most wear.
If your footprint shows the entire sole of your foot with little to no curve on the inside — or if your shoes show the most wear on the inside edge — it means you’ve got low arches or flat feet. This means your feet roll inward. Flatter feet can create extra wear on the outside heel and inside forefoot. You’ll want a shoe with a motion-control feature and maximum support.
If the footprint shows only a portion of your forefoot and heel with a narrow connection between the two — or if your shoes wear out mostly on the outside edge — you have high arches. Meaning your feet roll outward. This causes wear on the outer edge of the heel and the little toe. Look for a cushioned shoe with a soft mid sole.
You have a neutral arch if your footprint has a distinct curve along the inside and your shoes wear out uniformly. Look for a “stability” shoe, which has the right mix of cushioning and support.
FEET CHANGE - measure your feet regularly. It’s a myth that feet don’t change in adulthood. They do change and you should measure them about twice a year to be sure. Sizes also vary between brands, so go by what fits, not by what size the shoe is. Shop toward the end of the day. Feet swell over the course of the day; they also expand while you run or walk, so shoes should fit your feet when they’re at their largest.
Don’t believe in breaking in. Running and walking shoes should feel comfortable right away. Use the rule of thumb. There should be about 3/8-1/2 inch between the front of your big toe and the end of the shoe — about a thumb’s width. The heel should fit relatively tightly; your heel should not slip out when you walk. The upper part of the shoe — which goes over the top of your foot — should be snug and secure, and not too tight anywhere. One should be able to freely wiggle his or her toes.
Understand the bells and whistles. Some models of running shoes look better suited to a space mission than a run in the park, but some of those groovy-looking features actually serve a purpose. Clear inserts, filled with gel, Freon, or air, provide extra shock absorption, as do those springy-looking things. These features are especially good for people who tend to get heel pain, and not so good for people whose ankles twist easily, as shoes with extra cushioning tend to provide less traction.
Know when to replace them. The average pair of running shoes should be replaced after about 350-400 miles of use. Better yet, go by how your shoes look and feel. Once the back of the sole is worn out or the shoe feels uncomfortable or less supportive, it’s time to buy new shoes.
Don’t over- or underpay. Good-quality running and walking shoes are fairly pricey — and usually worth it. A $25 pair shoes are most likely not going to be as good as a $100 pair. But you’ll pay a premium for super-fashionable styles or those associated with a celebrity — and they won’t be any better for your feet.

I’ve been a big fan of Ben Sherman, their whole line of clothes and shoes, for a very long time. Ben Sherman has been setting trends for decades and there is quite a bit about their aesthetic that I really enjoy. The look is both clean and somewhat dressy, while at the same time terribly hip. I don’t know, maybe I have some hidden anglophile sensibilities residing within me.
Piperlime is currently holding a up to 50% off of select merchandise sale. These Ben Sherman Carburante sneakers are part of this special selection. Wow, these are really smart looking shoes: lace ups, chocolate brown leather and suede uppers with light blue accents. Now only $44.99, marked down form $90.00. If you ever keep your eyes peeled for Ben Serman goodies, then you will know that this is an amazing price, an an amazing opportunity.
Piperlime is a new shoe shop from the Gap line. We have some Piperlime Coupon Codes available to help you explore what these new kids on the block have to offer. Give them a shot! Looks like they have some great stuff!

My wife and I had a discussion a few months ago on the subject of flip flops. The warm spring weather was starting to hit and we were getting ready to spend a long weekend in Palm Springs were we knew the temperatures were going to be over a 100 degrees. As we were packing the day before, she noticed and just couldn’t believe that I hadn’t thought to purchase any for myself. Now that I was living in Southern California again, flip flops are a must. Especially since we were going to spend the next couple of days around the pool in very hot weather, need to let the toes breath. So we paid a visit to American Eagle later that day. I am so happy she inspired me to make that decision, I ended up getting a super comfortable pair of AE Stitched Leather Flip Flops for $29.50. I have been so much happier with these flip flops, than I would be with my normal footwear.
American Eagle Coupon Codes - Save 70% Off during their Clearance Sale + Free Shipping
Now my wife is one of those folks who will (if the situation allows and is appropriate) wear flip flops all year long. She has long been an adherent, and owns several pairs in different colors and styles. I know she isn’t alone in this. I have seen women all over California and the warm weather states down South who seem to be big time devotees. She tells me that the trick to pulling this off for any length of time without hurting one’s feet is to buy high quality sandals with some toe and arch support. She seems to be a big fan of the ones available from PacSun.

My wife is a die hard fan of the Roxy Peony Sandal from Pacsun.
Gives your feet somethng appealing with these hip sandals from Roxy. Colorful snake skin design straps, adjustuble buckles on the side and ankle and logo imprinted on the heel area.

I love polarizing fashion trends.
There are certain style options that pop up from time to time, that while undeniably popular, also produce an equal amount of “I don’t get it, I’m not into it”. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, and can think of a few fads that fit these parameters. I personally am thinking about Ugg boots. The big puffy, sheepskin Ugg boot has been nigh ubiquitous for a good five or six year now. Undeniably popular, yet I always hear folks claim they would never wear them.Maybe the secret to fashion is simply the ability to get people talking and take notice.
Well the Ugg phenomenon was explained to me simply by my friend Michelle - COMFORT!
Therein lies the crux of the matter. Too often fashion trends and styles appointed to women entail squeezing a size 9 foot into a narrow (albeit sexy) stiletto! Ugg boots are very comfortable! In her words it’s like enveloping your foot in a cloud of pillows. And as far as style goes, they are getting cuter by the second!

They certainly don’t seem to be going anywhere and are in fact more popular than ever with their 2009 spring styles. The Classic Cardy can now be found in several vibrant spring colors: grey, aqua, sage, clay, sunflower and several others. I have no doubt the aqua Classic Short flavor will be a huge hit. That’s just my prediction. Another is that Ugg’s may have crossed the line from fad into something more enduring. Hey folks it has been several years, it seems like the people have spoken on this issue! Once in a blue moon it seems COMFORT trumps SUFFERING for fashion.
Check out these Ugg boot coupons from CouponMountain.com. People will think your feet are super cute, coveting your boots for themselves…that would be prediction number three.

It was a big Greek themed evening. Sara, myself, our friends Jill, Scott and Voula were all out at a Greek restaurant we heard excellent things about up in the San Fernando Valley. Jill and Scott were eagerly looking forward to their upcoming vacation in Greece and Voula who’s family hails from the islands and has spent many a summer there over the course of her life was giving them some pointers.
“…and another thing, they are very fashion forward over there” she was saying “They are up on trends way before they hit the States. I noticed ladies wearing those gladiator sandals in Greece two or three years before I ever noticed them here”. “Weren’t they wearing those things three thousand years before they hit here?”, I snickered.
Ahh those gladiator sandals. They have been a hot trend here for a good three or four seasons now, and their popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing down. They are still a cornerstone in this year’s spring fashion footwear offerings. In fact, they are starting to feel more like a mainstream basic than a trend that will disappear next season. The ladies just love them it appears. I understand why, gladiator sandals come in all shapes, styles, colours and heel heights. Not all gladiator styles strap high above the ankle or sport copper hardware. You can purchase a pair that are a little less “gladiator-esque” if you fancy a more timeless and pretty look. The style often looks very smart when combined with skinny jeans or clam diggers. I also like them with skirts and frocks because of the appealing contrast that is created between something very feminine and quite edgy. Add a well groomed foot to the equation and you’re in business. On a side note, gladiator sandals appeal to me because I like it when the ladies show a little ankle, gets the Victorian in me all hot and steamy.
Check out the “Multi-Colored” Gladiator Sandals from the Gap featured above. (100% leather, wipe clean and imported)
Originally $39.50
Now on SALE for $29.99
Do you have your new springtime footware covered? You need to get that handled! We have some great Gap coupons available right now, and The Gap always has a wide variety of options for spring and summer. I noticed several varieties of gladiators in the $30 range on their website this morning. Oh come on, let your feet breathe, they deserve it!
