I have been rather frustrated the last couple of years that I have not been able to own a dog. My last three living situations, pets have been strictly forbidden by our lease. I am a man that grew up with several canines around at all times. Dogs just make me happy. I remember when I was living in Oakland, CA for a the year of 2007-08 I volunteered at the local humane society a few times a month just to get my fix.

Prevented from living with a dog since 2005 has left me with a quite a bit of time to muse on which breed I would like to own, so that I am fully prepared and ready the next time I am allowed to own one. Oh in reality any animal I get probably will be a mixed breed, rescue dog like the vast majority I have had during my lifetime. That being said, I do recognize enough bourgeois tendencies within myself to dream of a fancy pure bred animal.

Though most of the dogs I have had previously were on the larger side, my last canine housemate was a beagle and I began to really appreciate dogs with a smaller profile. This just makes the city dwelling lifestyle I tend to pursue more comfortable for both myself and the pet that shares my space. The French Bulldog has been the breed I have had my eyes on for the past few years. The compact, muscular, snub nosed breed about half the size of a traditional English Bulldog. They are bred as companion dogs that like to be around people and generally have a happy-go-lucky attitude. I am also a big fan a certain bit of dubious history with regards to the breed. Apparently when French Bulldogs first appeared in the mid 19th century they became a stylish affectation of the the Parisian “Belles De Nuit” - the street walkers. One reason for this is that when strolled, the exotic looking dogs brought attention to their owner, and gave potential customers a legitimate reason to chat with her. Another is that the docile breed was content to nap for short stretches when brought to hotel rooms, without making a fuss. Breed historians can still sometimes turn up notorious “French Postcards” bearing images of scantily clad French prostitutes posing with their little “Bouledogues Français”. The aura of notoriety that ownership of the little dogs conveyed made them a fashionable way for the well-to-do classes to show off how daring they could be, and they soon became favorites of the “artistic” set across Europe.

Well though I am still waiting to gain the opportunity to share my space with said beastie, I sure am glad that I know places like Dog.com exists. Pet Coupons - Take 10% Off at Drs. Fosters & Smith

By Evette on Jan 28th, 2009

Buddha the Bulldog as Tigger

Ahhh, feast your eyes on the culprit of all the pet shenanigans in my life - Buddha my English Bulldog!

Let’s get a couple of things out of the way immediately.

    • Yes - I am one of those people that dress their dog for Halloween, and I do NOT believe as my brother states that his eyes are pleading for mercy when I dress him. :)
    • I love my dog more than life itself and spoil him rotten at every opportunity.

Recently the portly little fellow has been lounging on the couch, which use to be okay but now he won’t budge even when guests are over. Doesn’t sound like a big deal you say? Then my friends you apparently have never tried to nudge a 65 lb. pile of lovin’ and fur out of your path! Initially I let this new found behavior slide because I figured that it is cold and he probably is more comfortable snuggling amongst the sofa pillows.

Fast forward two weeks and we now have dog hair all over the couch and a “panting-heavy- breather” looking over your shoulder as you play Wii or watch TV. He use to love his dog bed, and would sleep lazily in it ALL DAY in the past. What changed?

So upon inspection the truth of the matter is, Buddha’s dog bed could use some upgrading. He’s going to be 6 soon and literally fills the entire crevice provided. Also he likes to lean his big head on the cushioned support rails and through the years these foam walls have all but smooshed flat.

Pet Coupons- Save 20% Off at Drs. Fosters and Smith - Sale

I did some shopping around and found this awesome 2-WEEK SALE on dog beds at Drs. Fosters & Smith!
