This has already been a big summer for Apple. We have seen a refresh of the iPhone with the 3GS and apparently on Friday we will see a new addition to the OSX family with Snow Leopard. Rumors abound as to what Jobs and company have in the works to unveil at their annual grand gala in September. These rumors include new versions of the iPod Touch and iPod Nano, perhaps larger storage capacity with a camera. Perhaps a new generation of the venerable iTunes, an advancement to iTunes9. The rumor mill has also been burning with talk about a touch screen tablet of some sort, a device to compete in the netbook market.
All this talk is just that of course…talk. While some rumors may, such as the iPod reboot, have more credence than others, we will see soon enough what Apple has in store for the upcoming year. What about this years new products that have already been released and are available right now?
The iPhone 3GS has been around for a few months now, and has been written about by others large and small almost to death. OSX Snow Leopard will be released as I mentioned, on Friday. I wrote a little bit about this the other day for our UK site. You can read about it here. There are few other products that have gotten makeovers this summer that haven’t received as much press hoopla though. These being, this years versions of the MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

MacBook
The 13 in. MacBook is Apple’s entry level model at $999. 2.13GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 160 GB harddrive with 2 GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics

MacBook Pro
With configurations ranging in price from $1199-$2499 and screen size selections from 13″ to 17″, the starter model gives us a 2.26 GHZ Intel Core Duo processor as well as 160 GB harddrive, 2GB of Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, SD card slot and 7 hours of battery time. With advanced configurations we can beef up the specs 4GB of RAM, 500 GB harddrive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB.

MacBook Air
The slimmest notebook on the block comes in two flavors for $1499 and $1799 respectively. The first offers 1.86 GHz Intel core Duo with 120GB drive and 2GB of Ram as well as the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. The advanced model comes with same but with a 2.13 GHz processor and a 128 GB solid state flash drive!
I recently purchased an Apple for my wife’s birthday and after not using one for a few years I had kind of forgotten how well made they were. My PC has beefier specs but I swear the Apple runs just as smooth if not smoother.

We have been speaking on the subject of Father’s Day quite a bit around here. We don’t want to sound repetitive, but it is coming up this Sunday. So for all of you that are still stuck on gift ideas I thought I would provide helping hand. Here are my top 5 Father’s Day Gifts!
All stuff that I personally, would very much like to receive.

Who doesn’t need a regular tshirt refresh? I prefer a new round of tshirts approximately twice a year. I like the comfort, but have to keep myself looking good and put together don’t you know. Land’s End makes a great shirt. 100% cotton, sewn side seams for a more comfortable fit. Resists fading, pilling, wrinkling, shrinkage and staining.
2. Revelation Hybrid Golf Club Set - 15% Off - Coupon Code: 5568

I can’t claim to be a serious golfer, but I do know it’s quite a bit of fun. I would love to have a set of clubs of my very own. 4. Makita 18V Cordless LXT Lithium-Ion 1/2″ Hammer Driver-Drill- 52% off for Father’s Day

A decent pair of trainers (or not) can make all the difference in the world as to whether I make it to the gym or not. Another item that I need refreshed every year, if not twice. The Air Edge Trainer is a simple training shoe providing everything that one needs and everything I don’t. Lightweight mesh with synthetic overlays. Reinforced stability zones. Forefoot and rear foot Nike Air Phylon midsole, Ortholite cushioned sock liner and solid rubber outsole with multi-directional traction pattern. I already own an iPhone, I actually got the very first version (well truth is it was gifted to me, I couldn’t afford it otherwise) and I immediately upgraded with the 16GB version when it was released….and well now.. I WANT THE NEW ONE!
Fact of the matter is it is hands down the coolest phone I have ever owned! And the easiest to use, from the moment I got the iPhone I never had to read thru a manuel or fidget with instructions, it is amazingly self explanatory and functional. Plus you will find once you join the world of iPhone users your friends and family who own them are only too happy to share cool apps they can’t live without or nifty short cuts they discovered or learned along the way.
It is quite a helpful little Apple family you join when you are an iPhone user. It was funny when my friends’ group was divided by team iPhone and team Blackberry. No matter what side you root for it is a general consensus amongst both groups that the iPhone is younger, hipper and well just plain “cooler”.
On top of sleek aesthetics it is really quite an awesome gadget. Fully customizable to whatever your user goals are. It is literally a phone, an iPod and an internet device all rolled up into one! There are literally thousands of applications for you to choose from, for health, buisness, or entertainment.
Here are some of the “NEW” features:
- Built in Video Camera
- FASTER!
- Cut, Copy, Paste Features
- MMS messaging
- Voice Control
- Spotlight Search
- Messages - send texts, videos, photos and more
Ahhh!! I want it! I’m feeling that Apple itch…
Starting at $199 for the Applie iPhone 3Gs and the $99 for the Apple iPhone 3G - You can try to preorder yours here: Buy New Apple iPhone 3G
Good luck!

Well it’s happened, she’s lost the crown. The Apple iPhone, that smart, sexy device that seemed to be on everyone’s must have list, has been outdistanced in sales by the Blackberry Curve. Has Apple dropped the ball somehow, lost it’s hip appeal? Hardly. The iPhone is certainly a super cool device with lots to offer. However this tectonic shift has me got to thinking about the reasons for it all. What does the Blackberry Curve have on the iPhone?
- Well the Blackberry Curve is smaller. Not that the iPhone is a bulky piece of gear, we’ve all seen it and we know it isn’t. The iPhone clocks in at 2.4 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall. The Curve is almost a half inch shorter, which means disengaging it from your pocket is that much easier.
The Blackberry Curve also has a physical Qwerty keyboard. Not that the touch screen keys on the iPhone are terrible or anything…but I gotta say, I’ve typed and retyped many an email on the iPhone because of that virtual keyboard. Maybe my fingers are just fat. I’ve gotten used to it (kinda), but there has been many a time when I’ve cursed the heavens and would have given my kingdom for a physical qwerty (usually when I’ve been drinking).
- The Curve has many a feature the iPhone doesn’t: many of the models have GPS functionality, video recording, Adobe Flash for watching video, and a flash for the camera. Apple will most likely fix some of these issues come this summer when they release their new model, but that’s not until SUMMER whereas the curve is NOW! We will see how everything plays out then.
- Last but not least, buying a Curve is a lot cheaper. About a hundred bucks cheaper with a two year contract.
So are these reasons for me to give up my iPhone and go with Blackberry? Well I don’t know about all of that…I will say it’s crossed my mind.

The Apple Store is offering (although hidden) refurbished iPhones for $100 off their original prices, 4GB are now $499 $399 and 8GB, $599 $499. Apprehensive about refurbished? These iPhone come with two full years of the AppleCare Protection Plan, which acts as an extended warranty. |
