When I was living in Chicago a few years back I often found it be an incredible hassle to do real grocery shopping. I didn’t have car (don’t mock me, lots of folks in Chicago don’t own vehicles, I am pretty normal actually, in fact I daresay noble), the closest supermarket was about a mile and a half away and it took two buses to get there. Oh it was fine most of the time, but if I needed or wanted real shopping, six to ten bags worth, at that point things got sticky.

Well at one point a friend from San Francisco came to visit and she convinced me to give online grocery shopping a try through Peapod. At first I thought it was a weird idea, “Grocery shopping online? You’re kidding me right?”, I had a very good experience. For the rest of my residency in the windy city I was so happy she exposed me to the wonderful world of Peapod. So what about you? Do you think online grocery shopping sounds attractive? Not convinced? Well let me try to make my argument:

You save time. What could be better? I do not know about you, but time is the one thing there never seems to be enough of. How would you like to save over an hour and a half a week on a chore that most of us hate? Sounds like a win-win to me!

No more crowds and scary salespeople. For me this is a big one. The days of wading your way through hundreds of people are gone. No more pushing people around or getting pushed. No more coming into the store and having the salesperson watch your every move as if your face had been on the Shoplifters Most Wanted. I really think if you try this method you feel much more peaceful.

You will save a lot of money. Really, grocery shopping online is cost effective. Many people find it difficult to shop without being distracted by displays designed to encourage impulsive purchases. Grocery marketers are very skilled at getting us all to spend more than we had intended. Shopping online encourages you to only buy what you need, reducing impulse spending.

I found the selections to be stupendous. They had the regular, Joe Blow items I would go to a more mainstream supermarket for, as well as all of the specialty vegetarian items that I would normally have to visit a place like Whole Foods, Gelsons or Trader Joe’s. See only one stop for you…your computer, in your jammies. Sounds like heaven.

Delivery is almost always free! Internet grocery stores have to maintain their market share to be competitive. They do this by offering good service at competitive prices. Free delivery is quite often one of the perks of grocery shopping online. You get all the advantages of online grocery shopping without the cost of delivery. Does it get any better than improved service without the cost?

That’s another thing…the benefits of delivery. I mentioned earlier that the burden of carrying things home often kept me from stocking my larder as I wished. Well order online and there is no haulin’! They come to you, at a time of your choosing. I felt like a total princess.

You can take your time. There is absolutely no pressure when it comes to online shopping. You have hours, days and weeks at your disposal. You can take your time to think about it, and ensure that there is minimum regret. Of course impulsive buying doesn’t stop short with online shopping. Still, your time is your own and you are in charge of it.

Online shopping is available anytime. If you are not a daytime person, and prefer to do your surfing at the wee hours of 2 or 3 am, amazingly you can still shop. That’s one of the best things about online shopping. It’s available the whole year, every day of the week. Even the owner goes on vacation, you can still shop!

Helping the Environment? You can feel really noble and good about yourself (and better than that neighbor you hate) that you aren’t spewing more exhaust into the air taking one more trip in the car. Just joking. But seriously? Why drive if you don’t have to?

It makes YOU feel GOOD: Imagine every delivery day is Christmas(or some other equatable holiday where you get presents if you don’t swing that way). Do you remember the anticipation you felt every year waiting for Santa? Well you can feel it again. Every week.
