I have been rather frustrated the last couple of years that I have not been able to own a dog. My last three living situations, pets have been strictly forbidden by our lease. I am a man that grew up with several canines around at all times. Dogs just make me happy. I remember when I was living in Oakland, CA for a the year of 2007-08 I volunteered at the local humane society a few times a month just to get my fix.

Prevented from living with a dog since 2005 has left me with a quite a bit of time to muse on which breed I would like to own, so that I am fully prepared and ready the next time I am allowed to own one. Oh in reality any animal I get probably will be a mixed breed, rescue dog like the vast majority I have had during my lifetime. That being said, I do recognize enough bourgeois tendencies within myself to dream of a fancy pure bred animal.

Though most of the dogs I have had previously were on the larger side, my last canine housemate was a beagle and I began to really appreciate dogs with a smaller profile. This just makes the city dwelling lifestyle I tend to pursue more comfortable for both myself and the pet that shares my space. The French Bulldog has been the breed I have had my eyes on for the past few years. The compact, muscular, snub nosed breed about half the size of a traditional English Bulldog. They are bred as companion dogs that like to be around people and generally have a happy-go-lucky attitude. I am also a big fan a certain bit of dubious history with regards to the breed. Apparently when French Bulldogs first appeared in the mid 19th century they became a stylish affectation of the the Parisian “Belles De Nuit” - the street walkers. One reason for this is that when strolled, the exotic looking dogs brought attention to their owner, and gave potential customers a legitimate reason to chat with her. Another is that the docile breed was content to nap for short stretches when brought to hotel rooms, without making a fuss. Breed historians can still sometimes turn up notorious “French Postcards” bearing images of scantily clad French prostitutes posing with their little “Bouledogues Français”. The aura of notoriety that ownership of the little dogs conveyed made them a fashionable way for the well-to-do classes to show off how daring they could be, and they soon became favorites of the “artistic” set across Europe.

Well though I am still waiting to gain the opportunity to share my space with said beastie, I sure am glad that I know places like Dog.com exists. Flea Season? Schmee Season. I Laugh at Flea Season.

By Daniel on May 29th, 2007
PetCareRX Yes, it’s just about June, and “flea season” is in full swing. Feeding your dog garlic isn’t working, you say? Then I suggest going to PetCareRX and picking up some safe but more effective flea killer like Program, Frontline or Advantage. They have some of the lowest prices on flea and tick products. Plus, you can get more than just pet pharmacy stuff there, like a new dog beg (that doesn’t have fleas), cat toys, bowls & dishes and tons of other stuff. PetCareRX offers free shipping on orders of $35 or more, and you can save another $20 off $150 with our exclusive MAYCPNMTN coupon code, good through May 31st. Really, your dog (or cat) will love you more for it.
