I am of the firm opinion that one of the coolest parties a person can throw, and if one plays their card right, memorable, is the Halloween party. Heck one doesn’t even need the lucky draw of a straight flush to make this party come off right. The fun is ready made!
Setting the mood with ghoulish sound effects and fun Halloween music. Dim lighting and a house strewn with images of ghosts, skeletons, witches and macabre creatures. Preparing food that resemble body parts of humans like fingers, ears, heart, eyeballs, bones, skulls, nose and tongue, using spooky and gross name for your recipes. Throwing a party for a holiday that screams (it is Halloween after all) for over-the-top decorative design, with everyone in costume…it seems to me that the party is almost handed to everyone on a silver platter.
Just think about how much fun you can have with the preparation and decoration alone. There are so many neat little elements available that can set the mood. Check out this new assortment of wine & party accessories from Wine Enthusiast.

Bats About ‘U’ Etched Tumblers (Set of 2)
The Halloween spirit soars with every sip! That’s because we all share something in common with our little winged friends—we’re batty about “the red stuff”. Wine, that is! These mouth-blown tumblers feature a bevy of etched bats, the perfect tribute for wine lovers who savor Allhallows Eve. Specially shaped to bring out the full flavor and bouquet of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other red wines. Also perfect for any other potion you wish to serve, punch to pop! From of our best-selling line of holiday-themed U glasses. Lead-free crystal collectibles available only at Wine Enthusiast. Dishwasher safe. $19.95 $14.99

Skull Swizzle Sticks (Set of 12)
The headiest way to cause a stir! It’s not an exciting Halloween cocktail till you add the finishing touch—a swizzle stick topped with a grinning skull. How many stirrers make serving Devil’s Punch a dead-on delight or Black Martinis a monster good time? Only these! Hand-painted resin skulls with clear beverage-safe sticks. Hand wash. $19.95
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year so there are no excuses, and since it is Halloween, there will be no remorse! Find the best Halloween coupons here, and scare up a good time!

This year we have decided to stay in during Halloween. No we aren’t boycotting the holiday, of course not, we love Halloween. We are going to cater to the trick-or-treaters! We live in a neighborhood that always sees lots of trick-or-treating traffic, and with our son only two months old, it seem like the right choice. A couple of friends are coming over and we are going to make a night of it, it’ll be fun!
Since this is what we are going to do, I want to make sure we have really good candy to pass out to the kids. I’m sure that we can all remember trick-or-treating ourselves, and how we felt when you would see substandard treats dropped into your bag. I don’t want our house to be “that house”, if you know what I mean. That being said, I don’t have the time to run all over town looking for the perfect Halloween candy. This led me to an online search. I found that there are some really fun, creepy and creative treats that you can buy online. Check out these Candy Crate Coupons, I’m pretty sure that you can save money going this route versus just shopping at your local supermarket as well.
Here are some of my favorites from the Candy Crate Halloween selection:

Creepy Confections Bug Pops 24ct.
Creepy Confections Bug Pops are lollipops with 3-D bugs inside, like crunchy beetles, spiders and flies! Flavors include Pineapple, Sour Apple and Strawberry. Totally icky and totally awesome! $29.99

Wack-O-Wax Wax Fangs 24ct
These, in my humble opinion, are classic. I was always really into finding wax fangs or wax lips in my goodie bag. They are a lot of fun. You gotta love flavored wax that double as a costume. $24.88

Oozing Eyeballs Candy 50ct
Eyeballs are an iconic gross-out factor in Halloween parties. Creepy enough to satisfy your most hard-core trick-or-treaters, but they’d be a great addition to ghoulish cupcakes or as some added realism to your Halloween pumpkin. 20 individually wrapped Jelly Filled Marshmellow Candy. Assorted Fruit Flavors ~ strawberry, raspberry & lemon. $4.80
Remember, once you have purchased the Halloween candies and have brought them home, hide them! Leaving them out will only tempt yourself and your family to eat them and before you know it you will be going back to the store for more!
Also, never pass out any unlabled or unsealed treats!
Happy Halloween!

Last night I was taking my nightly walk around the neighborhood and ran across a man who in full Halloween preparation mode. He was really going all out, draping decorations not only all over the front of his house, but his front lawn too. We are talking ghosts, skeletons, jack-o-lanterns, tombstones, the whole she-bang. I spoke to him for a few minutes about his zeal for a having holiday fun, and it really warmed my heart. Actually maybe I should say that it left my heart frozen with dread, knowing the dead were about to rise up and stalk the land. Hey it is Halloween we are talking about!
So are you scared yet? Well maybe you should be after realizing that Halloween is just two weeks away and you have done absolutely nothing to prepare! What are your plans for All Hallows Eve anyhow? Myself, I am having a few friends over and we are going to cater to the trick-or-treaters. I have preparation to think of myself. I suppose we could just snack on the candy overflow that we are handing out to the kids, but that seems rather lazy to me. Drawing inspiration from my neighbor I think it would be much more fun if I threw myself into the theme of the evening.
The Popcorn Factory has some really spooky fun gift and party assortments starting at $19.99 for this Halloween. These would be great for your parties whether they be at the office or home, or simply to send as gifts.
Boo! Towers The only thing scary in this gift tower is The Popcorn Factory’s exclusive and popular Boo! design-everything else is truly delicious! The fun, raffia-tied tiers come filled to capacity with plump, in-the-shell pistachios, colorful Halloween Jelly Belly beans, sweet mellocreme pumpkins and a box of 9 peanut butter-filled chocolate pumpkins. You can also add a 5th tier tin of sweet, specialty popcorn flavors (decadent Chocolate Drizzled Caramel, rich Peanut Butter Chocolate, seasonal Caramel Apple and sweet S’Mores corn with real marshmallow and graham crackers) and this tower becomes super special. It’s an absolutely perfect gift to send ahead to your generous Halloween party hostess. Or, get a jump on the holiday season and be the first to send a shareable thank-you gift to your favorite, fun-loving office staff. This is an outstanding value for the price!
- 4 Tier Tower $39.99
- 5 Tier Tin & Tower $59.99

Let’s join together for a moment and meditate on what Halloween means to all of us! Halloween is of course about having a fun night out, dressed to the nines in your stellar costumes but the CHILDREN, they know what the REAL DEAL is - CANDY!!
Geez, I remember when I was a child, stuffing my face so full of candy at Halloween (and the morning after!) that I almost felt ill. Sure my brain and later my stomach would send definitive signals that I had reached my limit, but try telling that to my hands! They were possessed I tell you, they would just shove handful after handful of sweet treats into my gaping mouth. I would ride the impending sugar high, bouncing off the walls well into dawn.
Do you remember that? That feeling? Oh brother, that was so much fun! And seriously, let’s ask ourselves, why should the kids have all the fun? Okay, maybe we don’t need to eat so much sugar that we feel sick, but we deserve a little something don’t we? Adults love Halloween too!
Cheryl & Co. recently alerted us to the arrival of their New Halloween and Fall Dessert Collections. They also gave us a really cool holiday offer to pass along to all of you:

Halloween, as we all know by now, is a holiday that’s been around since the ancient Celts, who used to celebrate the festival of Samhain to mark the end. Now it seems that this hallowed of all holidays is used to mark both the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the new season of “Desperate Housewives.” Not to mention a piss poor excuse for every adolescent girl to dress like a street walker. Hmmm, the last time I checked zebra print underwear and a pair of ear muffs does NOT a costume make! But alas I digress….
The Celts, according to old Irish folklore known as Wikipedia, believed that on Oct. 31 the line between The Living (us) and The Dead (Abe Lincoln, Socrates, Jimi Hendrix) dissolves. While it seems far-fetched that the dead could return, it does explain many mysteries such as Larry King, Regis Philbin and John McCain. But the Celts did not think fondly of The Dead and believed that the deceased did not return to the land of the living to host our talk shows, game shows or to run for president
With Halloween fast approaching we have spoken a few times about the preparation involved involved with it all. There are three, count ‘em, three different BuyCostumes.com promo codes currently available that will allow us anywhere from 10%-25% off ! Most recently I mentioned my burning desire of painting my one month old son blue and having him go as the baby Krishna. I even mentioned this to my mother-in-law not more than two day ago.
Her response? “I do not think we will be doing that!”
Boy oh boy did I have to hold back a biting response. After all, in what world does she exist where she thinks she gets any say in this whatsoever?
I took a deep breath and decided to let it go…family wars over silly issues such as infant Halloween costumes are not my style. I’ll just pick a really wicked one for myself.
When I was a young child, there were a vast slew of really incredible Star Wars costumes and masks released. They were incredible, totally looked like the real thing and I was utterly fascinated by them. I think it is more than high time I relieved some childhood dreams
Boba Fett Supreme Edition
This costume will allow you to become the spitting image of Boba Fett. Transformed into a man of mystery and danger, you can travel the galaxy on Slave I, always looking to make a deal and complete the hunt.
The Boba Fett Supreme Edition Adult Costume is a top of the line Star Wars costume for only the truest of fans! It includes a jumpsuit with attached cape and molded armor pieces - chest, collar, back, codpiece, shoulder pieces, gauntlets, knee armor, and shin weapons. Wookie braids, belt, molded ammo belt, gloves, jetpack, and a collector’s edition helmet are also included to make this costume the complete Star Wars look right out of the movies! $699.99

The other day I was speaking to my wife about our newborn son’s first Halloween. I pitched the idea of painting him blue and having him go as baby Krishna. (Hahaha!) You may or may not get, and it may or may not be an idea that takes root (probably not) but I thought it was funny in the moment.
Yes Halloween is two months away, but that isn’t very far away at all. That time will go by in a snap. Besides, I just noticed that Pottery Barn Kids is having a big sale on children’s Halloween costumes. The costumes start at $29! I’d say that is a very good reason for all of us to give some thought as to what outfits our little ones will trick or treat in this year.
When picking out costumes this year just try to keep a few things in mind. You may be excited to dress your child up and parade her around for all to see, yet for children under 3, Halloween can be a scary day. Most young children have trouble differentiating between fantasy and reality, which can make not only people dressed as witches and ghosts, but even a life-sized Winnie the Pooh seem terrifying. Explain to your child that both kids and grown-ups will be playing “dress up” on Halloween. To help him understand that costumes are just make-believe, it’s a good idea to experiment with costumes and make-up about a week before the big day. Let your child try on different outfits and make-up and look at himself in the mirror so he can see first-hand that he is still the same person inside even if he looks different outside.
Likewise, seeing mom or dad go through the motions of putting on and taking off a costume will help him understand that it isn’t magic that transforms the kids and grown-ups he knows into princesses and robots. It’s best to avoid masks since your toddler relies on adults’ facial expressions to gauge how he should feel about unusual situations. Chances are he’ll need to see your smiling face at some point on this strange evening. Plus, he may not be able to recognize that it’s you under the mask.
Just keep it on the tame side. Make sure those little guys know it’s you under there. I think with that in mind we will have a great time with our young children on Halloween this year. I for one am looking forward to it!

Fireworks are the best, most perfect way to end your July 4th holiday weekend. I remember as a kid being filled with anticipation as all the local fireworks stands began to pop up on vacant lots and street corners. I couldn’t wait to buy our assorted box of fireworks, I was always a little bummed that my Dad would never buy the OMEGA-All-INCLUSIVE jumbo box! That bad boy had those rocket ones that you lit and ran for cover! Feelings of not getting the jumbo box would always vanish however, once I started setting those babies off in my driveway.
Times have changed though here in Los Angeles County and it is no longer legal to sell nor to own fireworks here. In fact the laws differ from state to state and county to county, every year with regards to America’s favorite July 4th evening celebratory devices. We all know that they are a great time, but please check out and observe your local laws (for your safety, and everyone else’s) with regards to fireworks before you drive across the state line, because you know of a fireworks merchant who sells “the really big ones”.
Yes more and more often, professionally produced fireworks shows have become the way to enjoy them. As I noted earlier, if one lives in Los Angeles as I do, a professional display is the only way to enjoy them. There is a great number of shows happening in and around the greater Los Angeles area both on the 3rd and 4th of July this year. You can check out a fairly comprehensive list 4th of July, Fireworks Shows here. I think it is generally excepted that the big shows go down at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood and at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
This years program at the Hollywood Bowl features the Los Angeles Philharmonic and John Fogerty of Creedance Clearwater Revival fame. There are tickets available for July 2, 3 and 4th. They can be purchased online from the Hollywood Bowl Box Office. “Americafest” at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena is billed at the largest fireworks display in southern California, with an expected 25-30,000 people in attendance. For the second year in this the 83rd year of Pasadena’s July 4th spectacular, the Rose Bowl presents Drum Corps International. This is Marching Music’s Major Leagues with five of the nation’s best Drum Corps units performing their field shows and music with amazing precision. Of course let’s not forget that both of these venues offer a truly world class fireworks display. You may purchase tickets for the Americafest at the Rose Bowl from Ticketmaster.
However you decide to pursue your fireworks fun this year, have fun and be safe!
