I’m sure all of you who have school age children did a good deal of shopping for back to school clothes two months ago. I’m also betting that you probably still have more shopping to do. The reason I am thinking this that two months ago it was still pretty hot out. In the past week or so however temperatures have been falling, and you quite probably are thinking there are more Fall and Winter clothing purchases to be made.

With this line of thought in mind, I have been keeping my eye out for teen fashion trends this season. The sort of clothes that will be appropriate for school, but the kids will want to wear. After all it is nice for the parents to be prepared and know what they are facing!

We also want to keep this budget friendly of course. So with your wallet in mind I looked around and found some very nice Delia’s coupons that will no doubt help you in this endeavor. Delia’s the trendy online retailer for girls and young women are currently 20% off of all outerwear!

Plaid There is certainly quite a bit of plaid around this year. Plaid could almost be the new black for teens this fall. You’re going to see it on your teen’s back, feet and head. Hats, sneakers, shoes, backpacks, shirts and more are all coming out in plaid. The Casey Plaid Coat from Delia’s is a nice choice. Double-breasted belted coat with button sleeve cuff detail. On sale for $79.50.

Black and Gray Jeans Black or gray jeans are really in this year, along with the less baggie and more form fitting cut. There is a very nice deal on these Morgan Low-Rise Skinny Jeans pictured above. Firstly they are on sale for $39.50, down from <strike>$49.50</strike>. Secondly they are Buy One, Get The Second Half Off! Don’t let the “low rise” scare you, all this means is that it is no longer fashionable to have your waistline above your belly button. These are a versatile jean that you can dress up or down, and are totally appropriate.

70’s Inspired Sneakers When it comes to sneakers this year, it all about retro. Take a look at the hottest shoes and they all seem to be referencing styles first seen in the 70’s. Now this does manifest in many different flavors, but I am a Converse guy and I really think these are hot. Suede Converse Chevron $55.

Mini Dresses While the sneakers reference the 70’s, the dresses seem to be referencing the 80’s. Shorter cuts have made a big comeback, with or without leggings. Here is a modest and school appropriate selection, once again in plaid like so many other things this Fall. Marisa Plaid Dress, Cap-sleeved shirtdress with front ruffle detail and self-tie at back. $44.50

We have all had one of those days where the only thing that seems to be working right is Murphy’s Law. So imagine you are at home, and it is really important that you print out a certain document. You turn the printer on, hear a really scary sound and find that your printer has decided to DIE a noisy death at this exact moment of dire need. So now it’s time to buy a new printer, just grrr-eat.
You have decided you don’t need a beefy office model. No you need something cheap and rated for home use. That would be the inkjet printer. However when it comes to this technology there is a wide, wide range of choices. So much so that it could seem a little daunting.
Inkjet printers meant for home use fall into two categories: inexpensive inkjets that typically cost far less than $100 for single-function printers and $150 or less for all-in-ones (AIOs), and a highly photocentric category, with prices of $150 or more for single-function printers and $300 or more for all-in-ones.

The inkjets in the first price category often include limited photocentric features like the ability to print directly from PictBridge cameras and memory cards. Inkjets in the more expensive category are photocentric to the point where you can effectively use the single-purpose printers as simple photo “kiosks” and the all-in-ones as standalone photo “labs.” They typically come with relatively large LCDs for previewing photos, and in some cases with touch-screen LCDs for giving commands. All-in-ones add the ability to scan 35mm film and print high-quality photos directly from slides, negatives, prints, memory cards, and cameras. Less common features include built-in optical drives to let you store images to or print from discs, and the ability to print labels directly onto optical discs.

Office inkjets include the few single-function printers and all-in-ones designed for relatively heavy-duty printing. They also include any AIO that adds office-centric features to the home all-in-ones’ ability to print, scan, and copy. Typically, they will work as standalone fax machines; fax directly from your PC’s hard drive; and scan to an e-mail easily, using your PC’s e-mail program and automatically adding the scan as an attachment. Office all-in-ones also add an automatic document feeder (ADF) for easy scanning, faxing, and copying of multipage documents, and they offer paper capacities of 200 sheets or more, often with a built-in duplexer (for two-sided copying). They usually leave out photocentric features.

You can count on almost any inkjet to print graphics well enough for both internal business use, like printing PowerPoint handouts, and home use, like printing party invitations. Pick carefully, and you can have output quality a graphic artist would be happy with.

It is also true that almost any current inkjet can print photos that at least match the quality you’d expect from your local drugstore. The few exceptions are primarily among printers aimed at offices, but even most office inkjets do a decent job with photos. Once again if pick carefully you can find all-purpose inkjets whose output rivals photo printers meant for professional photographers.

One of the cruelest jokes with regards to my wife’s recent pregnancy is that I ended up gaining more weight than she did! I’ve tried to deny it, but it’s impossible. The way my clothes fit tell the undeniable tale. Somehow just five weeks after giving birth, Sara looks slim, svelte and beautiful…while I am sporting a rather undistinguished gut. Geez, how did that happen?

I started getting a real complex about it. This is a problem I really need to knock on it’s head, because I simply just cannot allow this situation to stand any longer. How to proceed though? Should I join a gym or try implementing a work out program at home?
There are certainly benefits to a home exercise program and equipment. How many times have you cursed the gym owner because you had to cancel an important appointment or meeting in order to hit the gym? How many times did you have to skip your lunch or breakfast for the gym? How many times did you feel like watching a movie but it conflicted with your gym regime? How many times have you wished you could watch your favorite television soap and workout at the same time?

Well dear friends the solution to all these questions is simple, buy home-based exercise equipment. When you have home-based exercise equipment, you literally have the gym right there at your fingertips. All you need to do is to get out of bed, brush your teeth (your choice), come your hair (your choice), stretch (you must) and start your workout routine! Come rain, fog or snow, you would be able to maintain your regular workout routine nonetheless.

Here are a few quick tips to buying the right home exercise equipment. You need to buy decent equipment: gear which is neither poorly built nor outfitted with a host of bells and whistles you might never use.Think before you leap and keep some sensible questions in mind: Does the machine have a warranty? How much space do you have? What is my current fitness level now and what is my goal? Will this equipment take me there?

One of the primary questions I think you should ask yourself is, “Do I enjoy this activity enough to actually use the equipment?” With that in mind let’s look at some of the choices:

Treadmills are a popular piece of aerobic equipment for home use. Treadmills let you to walk or run at any time in any weather. When purchasing a treadmill, look for a solid, smooth action, a steady pace, wide belt, safety shut off, and incline settings.

Pictured above is the Sole F85 Treadmill. This folding treadmill is equipped with a high-output 3.5 continuous-duty HP motor, 6-window LED display and 1-in deck offering outstanding shock absorption. It has speed/elevation controls in the handles that allow you to change the speed and incline at will. Marked down from<strike> $2499.00</strike>, now available for $1999.00

Elliptical trainers are currently the most popular machine in the health clubs. They offer a comfortable, non-impact exercise activity that almost anyone can do. You can work at a high or low intensity so it’s good for all fitness levels.

The Schwinn 431 Elliptical features a compact design, perfect for your home.

There are a whole host of opinions and advice circulating out there on how best to take care of one’s skin.

“When you eat a lot of chocolates or junk foods, you will get acne.” “Pimples are caused by poor hygiene.” “Skin care products with the word ‘natural’ on the label are good for you.”

How many of these maxims about skin care do you really believe in? In a world which puts too much stress on physical beauty, it is sometimes frustrating for an individual to have less-than-perfect skin, which is why it is tempting to believe in all these “principles” as far as skin care is concerned. I really do believe that a good skin care regimen really depends on genetics and common sense. It pays to be selective about which skin care advice you should take, and the latest fad (much like with dieting) is not always the course one should take. What you need to do is be a keen observant about which products lead you to have breakouts or skin rashes – and steer clear of them. At the end of the day, taking care of your skin is all a matter of choosing the right products and having a good skin care regimen that you can follow on a daily basis.

Cleanse

The first step will always start with washing one’s face. Simplicity is key here and there is no need to spend $50 or $60 on a super fancy wash. Though bear in mind, common bar soap will do you no good either. That stuff will dry out your face. This non-drying formula from Clinique will maintain protective lipids and loosen surface flakes, prepping the skin for exfoliation. You can find this Liquid Facial Soap in 3 skin typed formulas for Price $15

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference.

There are several methods in achieving this. Some more expensive and drastic than others. For example scrubs vs. a chemical peel. In the hour it takes to get a chemical peel, you can take off five years from your face. However can you afford the monthly bill for a chemical peel?

Our favorite method is a Clarifying Lotion. De-flakes, sweeps away buildups of oil and nudges fresher skin to the surface. This will help dry skins maximize moisture and oily skins avert breakout. This one from Clinique comes in 4 skin typedformulas and will run you $11.50 for a 6.7 oz. bottle.

Moisturize

While I know of at least one famous beauty editor who swore skin doesn’t need moisturizer, basically everyone else I’ve read disagrees and is an adamant believer in it. A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. (The only exception is those with acne). Why? Moisturizers seal moisture into skin. So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you. When your skin is tight, it’s crying out for moisture. Be careful not to overmoisturize — this can cause clogged pores.

Sunscreen

The number 1 cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it’s important to use sunscreen from your early years on even in winter and on cloudy days. Time and again dermatologists and skin care experts say that applying sun screen is the most important part of a good skin care regimen.

If there are two themes that I have noticed about this past Spring and Summer is:

1. People are having BABIES

2. People are getting MARRIED!

Not always in that order but you get my drift.. I am being a little dramatic while making this statement, but it seems like every other week I am shopping for a new wedding gift. Let me tell you, sometimes that can be very difficult! No, I’m not speaking of the cost and my pocketbook, though it is true, one must keep control of costs when buying so many gifts. No, I’m just speaking of buying gifts for people (usually family) that I might not know so well. What do you buy for cousin Erin (who you haven’t seen since 7th grade) and her new husband (who you only met briefly last Thanksgiving)?

There are a couple of rules of thumb when purchasing wedding gifts. Methods to insure that your gift is appreciated and not secretly despised. Here we go:

1. Money - Yes you can just give them money. Didn’t you see The Godfather? Just slip the bride an envelop of cold hard cash. It isn’t as tacky as you might think. It’s old school, and you probably will feel like a true player as you do it.

2. Use the registry - We all know at least one person who went a little crazy and registered for something outrageous like $100 toothbrush holder. However, if the registry lists gifts within your price range, choose something from the list. The couple will be thrilled to get exactly what they asked for.

3. When using the registry, try to complete a set - If you see that someone has already bought a place setting off the registry, buy a second one. If the casual dishes are filling up but no one has bought a formal setting, stick with the pack. One setting of formal dishes isn’t going to get a lot of use.

4. Always include a gift receipt - In spite of the best of intentions, duplicates happen when it comes to wedding gifts. (My sister received three fondue sets.) Resist the urge to think, “if I don’t include a gift receipt they’ll have to keep mine.” Remember that it’s a gift and it’s supposed to be about the bride and groom. A gift receipt is a simple way to ensure that your gift won’t go to waste.

5. Consider a gift card - This achieves much the same as the cash envelope option. If you’re traveling to the wedding, are unsure what to get, have budget concerns or simply want to be practical, buy a gift card for the store the couple is registered with. You can’t go wrong with that. Gift cards don’t break, are always the right color and they guarantee the perfect gift every time. Best of all, they’re really easy to wrap.

Now if you are really insistent on purchasing off the registry, I really advise at the very least shopping in a “safe zone”. Meaning buying from a store where all of the stuff is pretty classy, and almost everyone likes it. A good option is Pottery Barn.

Not to state the obvious BUT - the main purpose of a mirror is to REFLECT. When used as an accent piece, mirrors have the power to create illusions and transformations! Hung appropriately, this decorative piece can instantly make a room appear brighter and larger. This one of the easiest and most effective ways one can spruce up a room.

Just to get your creative juices flowing let me run through a list of all the effects you can achieve through a mirrored world:

Long, oval mirrors allow a short room to appear taller.

Wide mirrors allow a small room to appear wider.

Floor-to-ceiling or wall-to-wall mirrors can double the size of a room!

When hung parallel to a window or a light fixture, mirrors can double the natural brightness in a room. They can also double a window’s attractive view.

In a dark closet or basement, a mirror can act as a window by attracting the small amount of light that is available.

Mirrors with frames can add visual, architectural appeal. Frames are available in wood, molded polyurethane, metal, plastic, eco-friendly bamboo and just about anything.

Hanging mirrors can fill an empty wall, and floor mirrors can fill an empty corner.

Mirrors are easy to clean and almost always appear like-new.

According to feng shui decorating, mirrors are the symbol of water and can calm or rejuvenate a room. Depending on your mirror placement, mirrors will improve health and family in the East, wealth in the Southeast and career in the North.

Make sure the mirror’s placement allows it to reflect something that you wouldn’t mind seeing twice. Opt for a nice window view over a bathroom or cluttered closet view.

While on this line of thought, I decided to peruse the offerings West Elm have available, to see what sort of accent pieces I may be able to add to my own home. West Elm is an upscale retail furniture company that has a wide range of accesories for contemporary home design.

From all that I’ve read lately concerning tech trends, the netbook market, those low cost, ultra portable notebooks are the only computing product segment that are truly gaining speed. With the telephone companies getting into the game, offering huge discounts on price when you sign to a 2 year data contract (just like with a mobile phone), I’m sure this trend will only grow.

Inexpensive and portable netbooks appeal to a wide audience, from businesspeople who travel frequently, to kids and home users looking for a small laptop to carry from room to room, to book-laden students who spend long hours on campus. It’s easy enough to tell a netbook from other laptops, but the differences between one netbook and the next are getting fewer and fewer. They generally have 8-to-10-inch widescreens and lack built-in optical drives. None have full-size keyboards—they usually range from 89 percent to 93 percent of full size—so expect a more cramped typing experience than with a mainstream laptop. You will find an abundance of USB ports, a webcam, a card reader, and built-in Wi-Fi. Some even have bonus features like ExpressCard slots, Bluetooth, and options for cellular modems. Most every netbook has adopted the Intel Atom platform, made up of the Atom processor, integrated graphics, and 512MB to 1GB of RAM.

I noticed a very good special the Dell is offering this morning concerning netbooks. Dell Coupon Codes that offer 15% off on Dell Mini 10 and Mini 10v netbooks priced over $459. Just enter code ?$HD8SFZQW2GBQ at checkout and you’re golden.

The Mini 10 and Mini 10v come in a few different flavors, but all of them offer everything you want in a mobile companion and more. They may be small, but you’ll be surprised by all the fun features packed inside.

Dell Mini 10v Like most netbooks these days the 10v comes with the Intel Atom processor and the Windows XP operating system. It weighs in at 2.5 pounds with a 10.1 inch glossy LED display and a keyboard that is 92% the size of a regular laptop. It comes standard with 1GB of RAM and you have the option of a 160GB SATA harddrive or a 16GB Solid State. Prices for the Mini 10v can be as low as $299.

They do share some commonalities such as the Atom processor, 1GB of Ram and Windows XP. The weight is basically the same with the Mini 10 weighing in at just one ounce heavier at 2.6 pounds. The screen size is the same 10.1 inches, however with the Mini 10 you ave the option of upgrading the resolution to HD. With the Mini 10 you have your choice between 250GB SATA harddrive or a 64 GB Solid State. The Mini 10 also offers GPS! Now that is a nice option. Prices for the Mini 10 start at $349

I do quite a bit of shopping at the Gap. I’m being absolutely honest when I state that probably no other store provides more “bedrock” to my wardrobe. Really. For my casual, everyday wear its perfect. The clothes I buy there always look good and it seems the ladies in my life always compliment me when I’m wearing them. They always fit well, feel well made and are comfortable. All this and the Gap isn’t outrageously expensive. I ask you, what’s not to like?

There are times when I am at other stores, looking for clothing staples that I would normally buy from Gap, and I decided to purchase elsewhere because I perceive that I just found a really good deal. Often times I get the product home and I am disappointed with something. The feel, quality or fit. I find myself saying at these times “I should have just gone to the Gap”. I’m serious, I’m not making this up. This happened just last week when I purchased some underwear from a well know big box store.

These are the undershirts I know, love and should have purchased:

Ribbed Tank

I haven’t always been a fan of the ribbed tank undershirt, but in the past five years or so I have become an utter convert. In fact, these days if I’m caught without I feel rather incomplete (for lack of a better term). These are soft and always feel right, the others I bought last week felt…well rather cheap. The ribbed tanks from Gap come in black, grey and white. You get them in packs of two for $19.50.

On the topic of essentials, here is another: the t shirt. Same basic story. I always am very happy with the basic t’s I buy at the Gap. However when I purchase elsewhere I am often not. I need to learn my lesson.

Best Crewneck

On the website, in the product description they call these the “perfect T” and I daresay it might be true. I just love these things and no other t shirt in my closet seems to compare. They come in a whole multitude of colors, with some of the colors being heavily discounted. The price range currently spans from just $3.99 to $18.00. Though let me tell you, even at full retail price these shirts are more than worth it.

Yesterday I wrote about how picky I am about the jeans I wear. It’s true, I totally am. But do you know which jeans in my closet are my all time favorites? You guessed it, the ones I bought from the Gap.

Selvage Standard Fit (rigid denim wash) jeans

I love these jeans. These are made from Japanese raw denim that are designed to form to your body. They look and feel really good and I can’t give them high enough marks. Currently on sale for $69.00!

These days I almost wear jeans exclusively. Denim is great for comfort, but it’s also great for style. That being said, I am picky about what kind of jeans I wear. I am picky about the cut, the weave and the wash of the denim. Very, very picky you might say. A run of the mill pair that one might find at you standard big box store normally won’t cut it for me. It really is too easy to go from feeling like a fashionable “million bucks” to kind of frumpy. I know it may sound weird for a guy to admit this, but alas it is true. I am willing to spend more to make sure my look is tight.

Choosing the best look for your shape and style is easy. If you want a pair of straight-leg jeans but you’ve got muscular thighs, try the best of both worlds. If you’re slightly on the muscular or heavyweight side straight legged but in a slightly more relaxed fit is a good option. If you’re a slim but medium-height guy, then don’t go for extremes. You may be able to pull off a super-slim fit, but it won’t necessarily flatter. Go for an average slim cut, and leave the ankle-stranglers for the models.

A true variable with jeans is that the styles really do vary over the years. Sadly though, jeans often outlive those trends. Denim is tough by nature and if you don’t wear them everyday those pants can last for years and years. That doesn’t mean you should cart out those hot acid wash you bought twenty years ago, just because they are still in good shape however. Silhouettes and washes have changed quite a bit, and it behooves you to try and stay ahead of the game. Refresh, refresh, refresh. Don’t allow yourself to fall into a fashion time warp. This is a huge danger for all of us as we get older, keep your wits about you. In my humble opinion nothing shows a person’s age more than to jump headlong into this trap.

In recent years, the slimmer, straight leg jean has made a huge comeback. Some jeans available will have simple straight legs all the way down from the knee to ankle, while there will be more than a hint of the ‘80s with taper leg jeans, too. With regards to washes, I am very partial to the raw look in a dark shade. Not black, but a deep blue, sans the heavy whiskering of seasons passed.

Buying furniture to outfit our new house has been a long, and somewhat tedious process. We had a long list of items to purchase, and we’ve been steadily chipping away at it:assessing our options for style and affordablility. I’m happy to announce that with our acquisition of a certain rocker from the Modernica warehouse sale last night, we have just one glaring omission left on our list. This would be the sofa.

This has been a tough one. Oh we have found many that we simply drooled over, but the major sticking point has often been the price. Many of the sofas that we really liked, even on sale are going for somewhere between $1000-$2000. To be quite honest, with all the other items that we needed to acquire, and with a new baby almost here, we simply do not have that money to spend on a single item of furniture.

When searching for sofas in the sub-$1000 range we have run into yet another consistent problem. Simply put trying to find a piece that we both liked to look at and was of the highest quality within our price range. Many of the vital signs of quality (or lack thereof) can be obscured by the siren song of style: alluring upholstery, svelte arms, and come-hither cushions, all piled atop sexy bare, mid-century inspired legs I so adore.

A sofa is a big investment, an item we will no doubt have in our homes for at least 5 to 10 years, it behooves us to always buy the best quality we can afford.

Frames should be made of kiln-dried hardwoods, with corners that are blocked, screwed, and glued.

Springs should be connected to each other with eight ties and then tied to the frame and covered. This is known as eight-way-hand-tied spring construction.

Run your hand across the back and make sure that it’s padded. A hollow back is a sign of poor construction.

Cushions come in down-and-feather blends, foam, spring-down, and combinations of all of these. Each one has their pros and cons, but it’s really a matter of comfort. Sit down and see which you prefer. Keep in mind that down cushions will require frequent fluffing, while foam will spring back on its own.

Remember all of this information isn’t necessarily to be found on a website product description, or on the price tag in a show room. You will need to find a spec sheet or ask a salesman some very specific questions.

You will want to measure everything before you buy, and I mean everything. Measure the doorways, staircases, elevator, and just about anything else you can think of. You will have wasted a lot of time, energy, and possibly money if you get it home and discover it doesn’t fit through the doorway.

Aside from color alone, make sure you put some thought into the fabric itself. A delicate silk or velvet won’t do if you have kids and pets roughhousing on the couch. If you’re the type to eat dinner while lounging on the chesterfield, a micro fiber will easily forgive spills.

The thoughts of sofas, and when and where we were going to purchase, ran heavily through my head as we wandered that Modernica sale last night. This morning as I opened my email I found several forwards from my wife form the Urban Outfitters website. I guess she was up in the wee hours investigating more furniture!
