Resolution Countdown: Get in Shape and Find a Diet Plan

Happy New Year everyone! In honor of the quickly approaching 2010, Coupon Mountain is helping you get started on your resolution. You’ve lived through the first decade of the Millennium, and the time to meet your goals is now. And with the US coming out of the worst economic downturn in years, things are looking up. Stay positive, be your best, and focus on becoming a happier and healthier person. You’ve been wanting to lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy for years. Now’s a better time than ever to start.
When it comes to losing weight naturally (as opposed to surgical procedures like gastric bypass or the lap band), diet and exercise are your best option.

health and wellness

One of my close family members had gastric bypass, and he experienced a life-threatening complication, and almost a year later, he still can’t eat his favorite foods (he probably never will). He’s 100 pounds lighter, and he’s much happier in life with a newly found sense of self at the age of 54. He’s working out every day, and he feels happy, confident, and excited to experience life with his athletic wife and kids. In the end, gastric bypass was a good decision for him because he couldn’t lose weight naturally, no matter how hard he tried. The end result was positive: he’s prolonged his lifespan, and his kids are very happy to have him around…but he has to worry about complications and potential complications for the rest of his life.

In any case, surgery is risky, and it’s definitely not for everyone. With the lap band and gastric bypass gaining popularity, it seems as though many people look to surgery as a quick fix. As someone who has had several surgeries, I would recommend against it. You never know what complications might arise, and in many situations, you don’t need to put your body through distress. Of course, only your doctor can make the right judgment call. Some people definitely need surgery, but it’s absolutely not a decision to make lightly.

My family member’s experience taught me a valuable lesson: the time to eat right and get health is now. By all means, I’m not overweight, but I’m definitely not thin. I’m happy with my body and self-image, but I’d like to eat healthier so that in twenty years, I can stay as healthy as possible. I have a gym routine, and I’ve been working out for years, but I definitely need to improve my diet. At 23, I have youth on my side. In 30 years, my eating habits will catch up with me.

I think of dieting and exercise as a way of life. It’s not about losing 10 pounds in a week, and it’s not about celebrity diets and gimmicks. To get healthy and stay healthy, you need time and patience. My doctor told me that it’s healthiest to lose 1-2 pounds per week and that I should get at least two hours of aerobic exercise. If you lose a bunch of weight at once, you’re likely going to put it back on quickly, since you’ll resort to your old eating habits. Of course, you should talk to your own doctor. Dieting isn’t the same for everyone.

Getting healthy, losing weight, dieting, and exercising is tough because you don’t always have the time to reorganize your entire lifestyle. That’s why I like Weight Watchers. The concept is great, and it really works: portion control. You receive a “points” chart when you enroll in this program, and every food is assigned a value. You moderate your diet by staying within Weight Watcher’s guidelines. With exercise or with Weight Watchers alone, you can get healthier without starving yourself or depriving yourself of the foods that you love. Once you’re done with the program, you’ll have developed improved eating habits that will follow you for the rest of your life. Look your best for any occasion: your child’s high school graduation, your friend’s wedding, or your upcoming job interviews. Best of all, you’ll soon realize that losing weight and getting healthy (whatever your goal) isn’t just about looks. You’ll feel great.
