While it is very true that my tastes in books run far and wide, both in fiction and non fiction, when I just want to relax and read for fun, few genres beat a well written mystery novel. My love of mystery books started very early in life. I remember reading detective novels when I was growing up, quite a few of them actually.

Every kid loves mystery stories. You see, for kids life is a mystery. When you are young, the most important task is to understand the world around you. You are born knowing nothing, and the first several years of your life are when you form your world view. Reading a good mystery story now and then can help you learn how to make reasonable deductions, showing you the logical processes that you will need to use throughout the rest of your life.

I was always placing myself in the story. If the story grabs my attention, I still do! Especially with regards to books with a strong sense of place. The ones that seem to really capture the vibe of the dark underbelly of the setting. I do so appreciate it when the region becomes a major character in the story. Whether it is New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, Paris or anywhere in between.

Overall, I like mysteries because there are two stories going on at the same time. There is usually a hero or heroine who is damaged in some way (physically, psychologically) or has a skewed perspective gained through experience. Often they are outsiders or loners. With which, I identify strongly. Through the story in the book, they overcome great odds. They resolve the narrative issues and move a bit forward on their own path as well. I tend to like the ones with recurring characters so I can see personal growth over time (over several books).
